🤖 Atlas Trains Where Cars Get Built

Plus: A Hand Drops Below $7,000, Standing Up Goes Hands-Free

Good Morning, Roboticists!

We may be approaching the point where buying a robot means choosing a chassis for software you already own.

Atlas Trains Where Cars Get Built

TL;DR: Boston Dynamics opened the Robotics Metaplant Application Center inside Hyundai's Georgia factory, where Atlas humanoids are training on automotive-parts sequencing. The Savannah site is a real production environment but not a production deployment: Hyundai's roadmap points to factory rollout from 2028. Boston Dynamics plans a facility roughly ten times larger in 2027 as it expands the training program. Read more →

More agents. More access requests. Who decides?

As AI agents multiply, so do the decisions about what they can access. Humans can’t review every request, and standing access can leave permissions in place long after they’re needed.

Opal Zero brings access decisions to agent speed. Paladin, Opal’s AI-powered access evaluation engine, evaluates requests against policy and context, automating routine approvals and escalating sensitive requests to humans. Permissions are scoped, time-bound, and enforced through the gateway you already run.

Developed with design partners Databricks, Faire, Elastic, and Superhuman.

A Hand Drops Below $7,000

TL;DR: Unitree introduced the human-sized Dex5-S hand at $6,500 before tax and shipping, saying its 22 joints are all backdrivable and protected against impact torque. Chinese launch coverage puts its domestic starting price at 39,900 yuan. The announcement leaves key deployment details unresolved, including weight, grip force, tactile sensing, sensor configuration, required software, interfaces, and a delivery timetable. Read more →

SoftBank Eyes The Dexterity Lab

TL;DR: SoftBank has reportedly agreed to acquire Marc Raibert's Robotics and AI Institute from Hyundai, according to reporting cited by Humanoids Daily. RAI, with offices in Cambridge and Zurich, studies robot dexterity and whole-body capabilities. The transaction is said to be under CFIUS review; neither financial terms nor a completed deal has been publicly confirmed by either side. Read more →

Standing Up Goes Hands-Free

TL;DR: Paris-based Wandercraft began the U.S. commercial launch of Eve, its FDA-cleared self-balancing personal exoskeleton for eligible adults with spinal cord injuries. Users manually control the custom-fitted device, which stays upright without crutches or a walker and leaves their hands free during use. Wandercraft positions Eve as another mobility option alongside, rather than replacing, a wheelchair. Read more →

The Fleet Finds Another Factory

TL;DR: MARTAC partnered with Florida boatbuilder SOLACE to add capacity for 100 Devil Ray autonomous surface vessels each year. The company will use SOLACE's 200,000-square-foot Edgewater facility to build the government-focused platforms, rather than construct another factory itself. The deal follows a separate Mystic Powerboats agreement as MARTAC expands domestic production of its autonomous maritime fleet. Read more →

Two Arms Roll Into The Lab

TL;DR: Philadelphia's SOMA Robotics set September 22 for the launch of two bimanual research platforms: a desktop unit and a mobile version with an omnidirectional base and lift column. Both pair six-axis arms, grippers, depth cameras, and 500 Hz control with soda OS for VR teleoperation, data recording, policy training, and deployment. The desktop system goes on sale first. Seven Bodies, One Policy

TL;DR: University of Maryland and George Mason researchers trained a quadruped locomotion policy on one robot in about two hours, then transferred it without fine-tuning across seven platforms. On real Unitree Go1 robots, it completed over 80% of ten indoor and outdoor trials at 1.4-1.7 m/s while recovering from pushes. Heavier or dissimilar robots remained difficult. Read more →

Painting Takes The Heavy Shift

TL;DR: Pace Robotics says its Centa Painter has moved into Indian construction-site operations after commercial deployment began in December 2025. The autonomous machine applies putty, sands, primes, and paints walls and ceilings, while site painters supervise it. The company reports a 5 crore rupee order book, repeat purchases, and more than 20 live evaluations, while claiming faster output and lower labor needs. Read more →

Retail Gets Three Thousand Eyes

TL;DR: Simbe says it has surpassed 3,000 autonomous shelf-intelligence units under contract, spread across more than 75 retail banners in nearly a dozen countries. Its Tally robots, computer vision, RFID, and fixed sensors track stock, prices, promotions, and merchandising conditions. The company calls it the sector's largest commercially committed fleet based on its own research, not a count of active units. Read more →
