🤖 Trash Finally Sees Value

Good Morning, Roboticists!
The robot that sorts trash might make more money than the one that walks like a human.
Trash Finally Sees Value

TL;DR: Scotland's Danu Robotics raised $5 million in seed funding for H.E.R.O., a vision-guided machine that ranks mixed waste by recycling value and grips items from moving belts. Danu says a typical installation costs about $160,000, with $24,000 annual maintenance, while potentially adding at least $485,000 in facility revenue. It has two letters of intent and $500,000 in signed contracts. Read more →
The Ball Starts Fighting Back

TL;DR: RAI's AthenaZero turned throwing, catching, and batting into a test of compliant mechanics: its two arms yield to contact forces rather than staying rigid. In Science Robotics experiments, the system completed all three baseball-style tasks, showing how lower effective inertia can help robots react to fast-moving objects without brute-forcing a fixed trajectory. Wind Turbines Get Air Mail

TL;DR: Orsted and Skyports Drone Services completed a four-week trial at the Hornsea 2 wind farm, using an autonomous cargo drone to shuttle 55-65 kg maintenance kits between a service vessel and turbines. The aircraft worked beyond visual line of sight over roughly four kilometres, automatically collecting and returning loads. The partners say it could cut vessel work during repairs. Read more →
Volkswagen Lets The Humanoid In

TL;DR: UBTECH and FAW-Volkswagen are moving their Walker S Lite collaboration beyond vehicle inspection into factory logistics. Under an October 8 agreement, they will develop embodied-AI demonstration scenarios and test robots at production sites, building on Qingdao trials involving bolt tightening, component installation, and parts handling. The companies pitch an adaptable humanoid platform to keep car production flexible as models change. Read more →
Warehouses Skip The Legs

TL;DR: Ultra Robotics raised a $50 million Series A, bringing disclosed financing to $62 million, to expand Operator, its stationary dual-arm warehouse system. OP1 packs, sorts, kits, and handles returns from a five-by-five-foot footprint, and Ultra says its robots have packed more than 500,000 orders. Its Physical Intelligence partnership has logged a company-reported 96.4% autonomous shift, with human intervention for exceptions. Read more →
A Robot Checks Its Homework

TL;DR: Aether AI introduced CRIS-0, a robotic system that predicts an action's consequences, verifies the outcome, then retries or replans when reality disagrees. In a household demonstration, Aether says it stopped a closing microwave door within 0.2 seconds of detecting a hand and replanned disrupted coffee-grinding tasks in two seconds. Its results remain company-reported controlled tests, not evidence of home reliability. Read more →
Britain Funds The Last Mile

TL;DR: Britain is putting GBP 40 million behind eight Robotics Adoption Hubs meant to move proven machines from demonstrations into everyday use. The network spans surgical robotics, agricultural picking, manufacturing, recycling, public-space service robots, drones, and driverless vehicles. Instead of backing a new robot project, the hubs will offer deployment advice, links to integrators, and financing support. Read more →
Drug Factories Get More Hands

TL;DR: Multiply Labs raised a $75 million Series B led by Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong and NantWorks to scale robotic manufacturing for cell and gene therapies, antibodies, viral vectors, and mRNA medicines. The company says its clusters automate manual biomanufacturing steps, cutting cost per dose by 74% and delivering up to 100 times manual throughput. AstraZeneca and Legend Biotech are customers.
